Statement by Minister Ahern on the situation in Gaza

“I am shocked by the tragic deaths and injuries on the beach in Gaza yesterday. Our thoughts go out to the families of those who have been killed and to the injured. I call on the Israeli authorities to ensure that their investigation in to the circumstances results in urgent action to avoid further civilian casualties.
The reports that Hamas may end its ceasefire are disturbing. This would be a dangerous development. All parties now have a duty to calm the situation and to focus on creating the conditions for a return to negotiations leading to a two-State solution.”
