“The Government are determined to do all within their power to secure the release of Rory Carroll, a Dublin-born Irish citizen. Following a further review of the situation today, the Government has decided to send a high-level team to Baghdad tomorrow to liaise with all relevant contacts and to report back to the Government.
The team will be headed by Ambassador Antóin MacUnfraidh, currently Ambassador to Finland and who served as Irish Ambassador to Baghdad before the first Gulf War, and will include senior personnel from the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Defence Forces and the Garda Síochána.
