Statement by Minister Conor Lenihan, in advance of visit to Niger by Mr. David Andrews

Statement by Mr. Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights, in advance of visit to Niger by Mr. David Andrews, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross.

“The situation in Niger is a cause of continuing concern.  Food stocks are depleted and one third of the population is directly affected by the shortages. The more vulnerable members of the community, such as children, are particularly affected.

David Andrews will travel to Niger today at the head of a delegation from the Irish Red Cross.

I have asked David to report back to me on the current crisis and on the local and international response to it.  David's wide experience, including the period he served as Minister for Foreign Affairs, will provide him with a valuable insight into the situation in Niger and I look forward to his report.

I have also asked an official with considerable expertise in this area to travel to Niger and report back.

Accurate and timely information is essential if we are to respond to this crisis and these visits will help inform our future decisions.

The Government have already pledged €1 million to Niger and we will consider any further response in light of the reports”.
