Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights, today met with Mr. Goitom Kahsay, Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Ireland, to underline Irish and EU concerns about human rights, civil disturbances and the treatment of the opposition in the aftermath of the recent election in the country.
Speaking after the meeting Minister Lenihan said:
“I expressed our concerns at the events in Addis Ababa over the past week. I welcome the assurances given by the Ethiopian Government that meetings between the Government and the opposition will take place today to resolve outstanding issues and to ensure that a joint approach is taken to resolving disputes in the outcome of the elections.
Ireland remains committed to supporting the ongoing process of democratisation in Ethiopia. We hope that the current problems can be resolved through dialogue”
