Statement by Minister Ahern on identification of the remains of Irish tsunami victim

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., made the following statement on the identification today of the remains of Mr. Michael Murphy in Thailand.

The Minister said:
“Today's identification of Michael's remains brings an end to a terrible period of uncertainty and distress for his family and all those who knew and loved him. I want to extend, on my own behalf and that of the Government, my most sincere condolences to his family.

The terrible events of the tsunami in southern Asia last December claimed four young Irish lives. I would hope that the families can find some relief in knowing that all have now been located and identified.  I would also pray that this will allow those close to them to find some closure at their tragic loss.

Our thoughts and prayers this weekend are with the bereaved families and friends of Eilís Finnegan, Connor Keightley, Lucy Coyle and Michael Murphy”

Minister Ahern said that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Irish Embassy staff in Thailand are extending all possible assistance to Michael's family.
