Minister for European Affairs Noel Trecy, T.D. welcomes outcome of Spanish Referendum on European Constitution

"I would like to extend my congratulations to the Spanish people as they join Lithuania, Hungary and Slovenia and become the fourth EU Member State to ratify the European Constitution.

The Spanish people are the first to express their opinion on the Constitution via a referendum. The people of Ireland will also have the opportunity to vote on the European Constitution. I look forward to that day and in particular to the lively and informed public debate that will take place beforehand.

The European Constitution, which was agreed under the chairmanship of the Taoiseach, does not change the Union's nature but rather makes it possible for the Union of 25 to move forward efficiently and effectively to face the challenges before it. I am convinced that, as people learn more about the European Constitution, they will recognise that it is good for the European Union and good for Ireland", stated Minister Treacy.
