Treacy Pledges Ireland's Support for Re-run of Ukrainian Elections

Mr. Noel Treacy, T.D., Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, has affirmed Ireland’s strong support for a re-run of the second round of the Ukrainian Presidential elections, set for 26th December next.

Addressing the OSCE Ministerial Council in Sofia, Minister Treacy outlined the grave concern of the Irish Government regarding the current situation in Ukraine. He remarked that the fact “that this complicated and tense situation has so far been addressed without recourse to violence demonstrates the maturity of the Ukrainian political culture”.

Urging all Participating States to strongly support the re-run of the elections, Minister Treacy noted that, at the request of ODIHR, Ireland will be sending a team of observers to the election of the 26th December.

“A solution, which must be achieved without violence, has to reflect the democratic will of the Ukrainian people and preserve the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”, concluded Minister Treacy.

While in Sofia, Minister Treacy took the opportunity to have bilateral meetings with participating Ministers from Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Georgia and Moldova.
