Minister of State Conor Lenihan T.D. announces €600,000 for the United Nations Development Fund for Women
Minister of State Conor Lenihan, at a reception last night in Iveagh House to mark UNIFEM Ireland’s 10th Anniversary, announced a contribution by Development Cooperation Ireland of €600,000 to UNIFEM International.
Speaking at the reception, Minister of State Lenihan said that:
“UNIFEM plays a key role in promoting the implementation of the UN Convention for the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Beijing Platform for Action and that these two documents set out a crucial and ambitious agenda for the realisation of women’s human rights.”
He confirmed that this year Ireland will contribute €600,000 to UNIFEM to enable it to carry out its valuable work on behalf of women. The Minister noted that:
“Development Cooperation Ireland’s anti-poverty agenda and mandate has much in common with UNIFEM’s strategic focus on ending violence against women, halting the spread of HIV, increasing political participation, and reducing women’s poverty.”

UNIFEM Ireland is the Irish national committee for UNIFEM. It was founded in 1994 and was officially launched by President Robinson in 1995. The Executive Director is Ms Mahin Sefidvash. It seeks to promote public knowledge of UNIFEM and its activities on behalf of women in developing countries and also engages in fundraising.
UNIFEM Ireland is currently working in two main areas,
• Raising the awareness of the society about the situation of women and refugee women in Afghanistan
• Fundraising towards a project targeting the welfare of women in a Refugee Camp in Kabul, Afghanistan.
