New RTE TV series to focus on the Future of Europe
“Europe - How are You?”, a two part series on enlargement and the Future of Europe will be broadcast on RTÉ1 at 10.15pm on 15 and 22 January. The lively and accessible programmes will be fronted by TV presenter Liz Bonnin and feature a range of contributors including Minister for Foreign Affairs Brian Cowen TD, Minister of State for European Affairs Mr Dick Roche TD, Commissioner Chris Patten, John Bruton TD, Brigid Laffan, Bill O'Herlihy and Fiona Looney amongst others. The programmes have been produced as part of the Communicating Europe Initiative, (CEI), managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Programme 1 outlines the preparations made by the ten accession states for enlargement, with a particular emphasis on Poland and Slovenia, and contrasts the historic enlargement of the EU during the Irish Presidency with Ireland's accession to the EEC in 1973.
Programme 2 will focus on the institutions of the European Union and the Future of Europe debate. The programme will outline how the EU institutions operate, the Convention and the Future of Europe and the ongoing debate surrounding the draft Constitutional Treaty.
The programmes have been produced by Stopwatch Productions for RTÉ and the Communicating Europe Initiative.
