Minister Cowen welcomes President Bush's initiative to reform U.S. immigration laws
07/01/2004
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., welcomed the statement by President Bush this evening in which he announced his intention to propose a new temporary worker program as a way of addressing the situation of undocumented foreign workers in the United States.
Commenting on the statement, Minister Cowen said:
“This initiative gives renewed hope to those who, for whatever reason, have been unable to regularise their status in the U.S.
We will need to study the details of the President's proposals carefully before we can assess their implications for undocumented Irish nationals in the U.S. and, of course, the proposals will have to be approved by the U.S. Congress.
However, I believe that President Bush's initiative represents an important first step in addressing the situation of undocumented foreign workers in a pragmatic and compassionate way”.
