Minister Cowen welcomes United Nations Security Council Resolution 1511
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen T.D., today welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1511 on Iraq.
“I am pleased that the members of the Security Council reached unanimous agreement on the way forward in Iraq and look forward to seeing the earliest possible restoration of sovereignty to the Iraqi people under a representative government. I hope that the role of the UN in Iraq outlined in the Resolution will prove sufficient for it to carry out its work effectively.”
Ireland will be represented at the forthcoming Donors' Conference. To date Ireland has provided €5 million in humanitarian assistance to Iraq and further assistance is being considered. The Minister welcomed moves to establish a Multi-Donor Trust Fund which is transparent in its operation and with effective accountability mechanisms and oversight.
