Minister Cowen condemns suicide bomb attack in Haifa

Speaking from Rome, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs, condemned today's suicide bombing in Haifa, which left at least eighteen dead and fifty injured.

He offered his condolences to the families of those killed and expressed his hope for a speedy recovery by those injured.

“We need to see an end to these attacks. They can serve no legitimate purpose and only make more difficult efforts to bring a just and lasting settlement to the region”, Minister Cowen said. “This is something we in Ireland know from our own experience”.

“This attack is truly shocking and I offer my deepest sympathies to the families of those killed”, he said.

The Minister urged the Israeli Government to show restraint and called on the Palestinian Authority to redouble their efforts to prevent terrorist activity.

Minister Cowen emphasised the absolute need for an immediate acceleration of the peace process if this horrific cycle of violence is to be brought to an end.
