Minister Expresses Shock at Najaf Bombing

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen T.D., expressed his shock at today's bomb blast in Najaf, in which at least seventy five people were killed, including senior Shiite leader Mohammad Bakr Al Hakim. He expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and his wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in the attack. The Minister said it was impossible to see how such mindless slaughter could advance any cause.
“The long-suffering people of Iraq require calm in which to rebuild their country and its institutions”, the Minister said.
The Minister called on all groups in Iraq to contribute to peaceful reconstruction and the creation of a viable and representative government which can serve the interests of all Iraqis.
