Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on terrorist attacks in Chechnya
15/05/2003
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen T.D., speaking to journalists on the final leg of his visit to the Western Balkans, strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Chechnya. A suicide bombing on Monday killed at least 59 people. A further 14 deaths have been reported following a second attack yesterday.
The Minister said that no political cause could ever justify acts of this kind. Those responsible for the attacks served only to damage the cause they claimed to represent.
The Minister extended condolences to the relatives of the dead. He wished a speedy recovery to the many injured in the attacks.
The Government continues to hope that a way forward can be found towards reconciliation and a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Chechnya.
