Cowen condemns decision by Democratic People's Republic of Korea to withdraw from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Reacting to the announcement by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea of its withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Brian Cowen T.D., said:

“I note with great regret the announcement of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea of their withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This decision is damaging to the multilateral system of non-proliferation and could have very serious consequences for regional stability. Ireland, together with its EU partners, will continue to urge the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to respect its international obligations and to submit its nuclear facilities to full safeguard scrutiny under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency.”
