Statement by Mr. Brian Cowen TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the situation in Moscow, 24 October 2002.
The Government strongly condemns the taking of a large number of people hostage in Moscow yesterday and the threats to blow up the theatre where they are located. No political cause can ever justify acts of this kind. Nor can any government be expected to concede to this type of blackmail. Those responsible only serve to damage the case they claim to represent.
Every effort must be made to bring about a peaceful resolution of the present dangerous situation. The Russian authorities have our full support in their efforts in this area. The Russian authorities face a very difficult situation in trying to ensure the safety of the hostages. We fully support the efforts being made to find an early and peaceful resolution to this tragic crisis.
