Minster for Foreign Affairs condemns North Belfast murder

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., has condemned the murder last night of Gerard Lawlor in North Belfast.

“Last night's sickening murder of Gerard Lawlor, a young innocent man shot dead in a cowardly drive-by attack, is a stark reminder of where savage sectarian hatred can lead. Northern Ireland still has a way to travel when an ordinary person, because of his address and because he was regarded as a soft target, can be callously murdered. I want to express my deepest sympathy and that of the Government to the family and friends of Mr. Lawlor at what is a devastating time for them.

Those involved in the series of shootings last night and, in particular, those who perpetrated this despicable act, seeking to return Northern Ireland to the vicious sectarian violence of its past, represent no one but the most insignificant and intransigent minority. They must not be allowed to succeed.

In an area where inter-community tension has been building up since last Thursday, and where attacks have been carried out on both sides, I call on those in positions of authority and leadership in the local community to do all they must to ensure that last night's events cannot be repeated.”Top
