Minister welcomes appointment of new PSNI Chief

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., welcomed the decision by the Policing Board to appoint Hugh Orde as the new Chief Constable for the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

"I congratulate him on coming through this open competition and becoming the first new Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Hugh Orde is clearly facing considerable challenges. Dealing with public order situations in a fair and effective manner, earning the confidence of the whole community and establishing a positive working relationship with the Policing Board are key objectives. Over-riding these is the central challenge of making the vision outlined in the Patten recommendations a reality for the people of Northern Ireland.

The Government looks forward to a close and constructive working relationship between the Garda Commissioner and the new Chief Constable and their respective forces, particularly in the area of structured North-South police cooperation. We wish him well as he takes up duty at such a challenging and rewarding time."
