Cowen attends UN General Assembly
The situation in Afghanistan and in the Middle East will be high on the agenda of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen, T.D. as he attends the 56th Session of the United Nations General Assembly this weekend in New York. The Ministerial Meeting of the General Assembly was postponed from September following the terrorist attacks in New York.
Today, along with his EU colleagues he will meet with the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Russian Foreign Minister Ivanov. Tomorrow he will meet with US Secretary of State Colin Powell. In his meeting in New York the Minister will stress the vital importance of the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
The Security Council will meet at Ministerial level on Monday to discuss counter-terrorism measures. The Council will meet at Ministerial level on Tuesday to discuss Afghanistan. It is expected that Secretary of State Powell and Foreign Minister Ivanov will be present at one or both of these meetings.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs will address the General Assembly on Monday afternoon, local time.
