Minister condemns assassination
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D. strongly condemned the assassination earlier today of Mr Rechavam Ze'evy, Israeli Minister for Tourism. Mr Cowen urged that every effort be made to bring to justice those responsible for this deed.
Minister Cowen pointed out that such acts are designed to obstruct efforts to achieve a lasting peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people. He urged the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority not to allow the enemies of the Peace Process to exercise a veto over urgently needed moves to commence negotiations on the implementation of the Mitchell plan.
Minister Cowen stressed Ireland's interest in a lasting comprehensive agreement involving the establishment of a Palestinian state and guaranteeing Israel the right to live in peace and security.
