Statement by the Minster for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen, T.D.

I was appalled to hear this morning of the despicable and cowardly murder in Glengormley, and the serious injuries sustained by another young victim. This is a devastating time for the families and I want to express my deepest sympathy and that of the Government to the families and friends of both victims at this terrible time.

There is little doubt but that this was yet another sectarian attack, and it comes less than one month after the brutal murder of Kieran Cummings in Antrim. There is no place in a civilised society for such activity. No-one has any mandate to engage in this kind of revolting brutality. The perpetrators of this heinous act must not be allowed to succeed in their attempts to return to the devastation and violence of the past.

Once again, I urge that all sides exercise restraint and that all with influence, either at community or political level, redouble their efforts to bring about a society where such evil deeds will be consigned forever to the past.
