Treaty of Nice - Launch of White Paper
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., will launch the White Paper on the Treaty of Nice at 11:00 am on Wednesday, 28 March 2001 in Iveagh House, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin 2.
The purpose of the White Paper is to outline and explain the changes which will be made by the Treaty of Nice, 2001. The Treaty is intimately linked with plans for the enlargement of the European Union and is intended to complete the process which began with the Treaty of Amsterdam of preparing the Union for the admission of a significant number of new Member States.
The Treaty is the outcome of intensive negotiations between the Member States of the Union at an InterGovernmental Conference. Its conclusion clears the way for enlargement, subject to the satisfactory completion of the accession negotiations with the countries which have applied for membership.
