Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D.
19/03/2001
I wish to pay warm tribute to Mary Robinson's achievements in the post of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Throughout her term as High Commissioner, she has drawn the world's attention to human rights abuses wherever they occurred and pointed to remedies which could provide a way forward. Her voice has been a strong, clear and consistent one on behalf of victims of human rights abuses. She has been true to her promise of being a voice for the voiceless.
Mary Robinson has greatly enhanced the post of High Commissioner and her legacy will be an enduring one. I would like to express our appreciation for her considerable achievements and to wish her every success in her continuing work as an advocate for human rights worldwide.
