O'Donnell launches "The World in the Classroom"

"The World in the Classroom", a resource manual for teachers aimed at introducing primary school pupils of all ages to the concepts of overseas development cooperation and assistance, will be launched by the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Liz O'Donnell T.D., in Buswell's Hotel at 5:00 pm on Monday 12 February 2001.

This gateway programme aims to develop children's concepts of fairness, co-operation and respect for others, through positive role models. It will also assist children to appreciate the diversity of cultures here in the light of the arrival of refugees and non nationals in Ireland.

Development education is a lifelong learning process which should rightly begin during infanthood. Children have a natural sense of justice and it is hoped this project will give them an even more enlightened view of the many complex issues in human development such as poverty, famine and war.
