Attack on Castlewellan Police Station: Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs

I want to condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack on Castlewellan Police Station. It was a cowardly and evil act designed to bring about death and injury and more misery to families in Northern Ireland. It was also an attack on the democratic process at a time when representative politicians are striving to reach accommodation on the way forward.

The timing of this attack is sinister and will contribute nothing to resolving any outstanding issues. The people who planned and carried it out are working against the wishes of the Irish people, North and South. They cannot be allowed to succeed and they will not.

I wish to convey my sympathy to the injured officers and their families.
