New Links Established on Chinese Writers' Tour
A delegation of leading Chinese writers completed a successful five-day visit to
Ireland today, meeting Irish counterparts and establishing links with cultural
institutions here. The visit was organised by the Department of Foreign
Affairs, with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy, as part of a strategy
to develop closer cultural relations with China and Asia generally.
Further projects involving tours to China by Irish artists and performing
groups are now being planned.
The popularity of Irish writers in China was emphasised during the visit, as
were certain parallels between Irish drama and traditional Chinese opera.
Professor Hu Yun Huan, a member of the delegation, commented after a Gate
Theatre performance of Oscar Wilde's Salome that "we came, we saw, and we
were conquered".
