Statement by Brian Cowen T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the decision of Mo Mowlam to retire from Parliament

I learned today with deep regret of the decision of Dr. Mo Mowlam to stand down as an MP at the next election. When the history of the peace process is written, I have no doubt that Mo Mowlam will have an extremely honoured place in that history.

Dr Mowlam made an extraordinary contribution to the negotiations which led to the Good Friday Agreement. Her deep commitment to peace, equality and human rights profoundly influenced the outcome of those negotiations. She is a warm decent human being who has touched the lives of many people in Ireland, North and South, for the better.

When Dr Mowlam steps down from Parliament, she will carry with her the good will of the Irish people. I want to wish her and her family the very best for the future. The people of Ireland will forever be in her debt for the enormous contribution she made to peace in our country.Top
