Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. David Andrews T.D.,on the Final Report by Senator Mitchell
Speaking after Senator George Mitchell issued his final report on the Review, the Minister said:
"Senator Mitchell's final report is another highly significant step towards the resolution of the current impasse and the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
In particular, I note his belief "that a basis now exists for devolution to occur, for the institutions to be established, and for de-commissioning to take place as soon as possible".
He has recommended to the Governments and the parties that they make the necessary arrangements to proceed, and has called on us to do so without delay.
The Government will shortly be issuing its formal response.
In the meantime, I would once again express our deepest appreciation of Senator Mitchell's magnificent work. As he returns to his family in the United States, he carries with him the admiration and thanks of the Irish people".
