Statement by David Andrews, T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs

I am deeply disturbed by the violent scenes witnessed this morning on the Ormeau Road. This is a particularly unfortunate occurrence in view of the fact that the indications were that the Ormeau residents intended a peaceful protest only. I understand that the residents withdrew voluntarily from the Road in time for the parade to pass. Yesterday the Government urged all sides to conduct themselves with restraint, as well as within the law. The Government have consistently stated that the various parades in Derry and elsewhere throughout the day should be conducted in a calm and restrained fashion. We are keeping in close touch with events through contact with community leaders and with the British side.
