O'Donnell to host Second Annual NGO Forum on Human Rights Saturday 26 June 1999
The Minister of State with special responsibility for Overseas Development Assistance and Human Rights, Liz O'Donnell TD, will host the Second Annual NGO Forum on Human Rights on Saturday 26 June 1999 in Dublin Castle.
The NGO Forum on Human Rights is intended to facilitate discussion on a range of human rights issues, with an emphasis on foreign policy. It is an annual event which acts as a vital link between the Department of Foreign Affairs and those active in the field of human rights, both in Ireland and abroad. Over 350 human rights activists and NGO representatives are expected to attend.
The Inaugural Forum took place on 7 March 1998 in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.
The main focus of the 1999 Forum is on the forthcoming establishment of the Human Rights Commission in Ireland. The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Brice Dickson, Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission.
A number of other human rights questions will be addressed in panel format including racism in Ireland, the effectiveness of UN Treaty Monitoring Bodies, womens' human rights and the European Union and human rights. This year's session of the UN Commission on Human Rights will be reviewed.
Media representatives are invited to attend the NGO Forum.
