Andrews welcomes appointment of Commissioners to new Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, David Andrews T.D., today warmly welcomed the appointment of the Commissioners who will serve on Northern Ireland's new Human Rights Commission.

Minister Andrews said "the appointment of this impressive team is another significant step forward in implementing the vitally important human rights provisions of the Good Friday Agreement. All of the Commissioners bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their task. I am fully confident that they will make an enormous contribution towards establishing a vibrant human rights culture in Northern Ireland.

The Commission will have a vital role to play in implementing the human rights aspects of the Agreement which will be crucial in underpinning confidence in the implementation of the Agreement as a whole. I wish the Commissioners every success in their endeavours.

I also look forward to the establishment, at the appropriate time, of the North/South Joint Committee in this area as outlined in the Good Friday Agreement. The Joint Committee will bring together the two new Human Rights Commissions, North and South, to consider human rights issues in the island of Ireland".
