SDLP central to achievement of Good Friday Agreement - Andrews
On the eve of the SDLP Annual Conference, the Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr David Andrews, T.D., in a message to the conference delegates, has praised John Hume and Seamus Mallon for their contribution to the Peace Process.
Noting that the SDLP was central to the achievement of the comprehensive and balanced agreement achieved on Good Friday this year, Minister Andrews said that the SDLP was fortunate in having two leaders of the stature of Séamus Mallon and John Hume. "John Hume's steadfast commitment to democracy, human rights and peace over the past three decades has been an inspiration, even in our darkest periods. He has made a massive and unique contribution to the cause of peace on this island. His leadership and visionary qualities have been acknowledged throughout the world."
Minister Andrews continued "Seamus Mallon brought a tremendous intellect coupled with a steely determination to bear on all the issues under discussion; we all know Séamus as a man of courage and honour, a man more than equal to the difficult job ahead of him as Deputy First Minister. He has all our best wishes as he takes forward this historic task."
The Minister concluded by wishing the delegates an enjoyable and successful conference.
