Minister meets representatives of Burma Action Ireland
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr David Andrews T.D., today met with the Chairman of Burma Action Ireland, Fr Pat Raleigh, to discuss the current situation in Burma. Fr Raleigh was accompanied by Mr Eamon Meehan of Trocaire, Mr Frank Jennings of Amnesty International and Mr Martin Lacey.
The Minister called on the military regime in Burma to restore democracy and to promote national reconciliation. He also called for the release of all political prisoners and for the lifting of all restrictions on the freedom of movement of the leader of the democratic opposition, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
The Minister stated that he would be pressing his colleagues at the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg on 26 October to extend the EU Common Position on Burma by the strengthening of the sanctions regime currently in force.
