Minister Andrews calls on Belgrade to punish Kosovo murderers
"The comprehensive nature of Security Council Resolution 1199 which was adopted on 23 September provides a basis for a solution to the crisis in Kosovo. It is therefore imperative that the parties to whom it is addressed comply fully and immediately with its terms," Minister Andrews said.
The Minister strongly condemned those responsible for the recent atrocities in Kosovo and called on the Belgrade authorities to identify and punish the persons who had committed such crimes.
"I welcome the speedy publication of the report by the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, which now spells out clearly the large scale of non-compliance since 23 September as well as his outrage at the recent atrocities. His report details what still needs to be done to ensure that the terms of Resolution 1199 are put fully into effect. I look forward to the earliest possible consideration of this report by the Security Council.
"I have been keeping in touch with the deliberations of the EU General Affairs Council in Luxembourg today. The Council called for an immediate end to the violence in Kosovo and the start of early negotiations on a resolution of the crisis. It also expressed its determination to increase further the effectiveness of the existing EU sanctions regime and to act so that the EU makes the fullest possible contribution to the pressure of the international community on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia."Top
