Minister Andrews appeals for an end to killings
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr David Andrews, T.D. has issued the following statement:
"The news of the murders of Mr Brendan Campbell and Mr Robert Dougan has been received with dismay throughout the island of Ireland. People had begun to hope that the series of murders which have taken place since Christmas were at an end. These hopes had been sadly dashed by those who have no concern for the sanctity of human life or the future of the community in which they live.
I condemn these latest atrocities and express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of Mr Campbell and Mr Dougan. I appeal to anyone who may be tempted to respond violently not to do so. Further acts of violence will serve only to bring about more needless suffering.
The appropriate response to these appalling murders must be for the security forces to bring the perpetrators to justice. They deserve the support of the wider community in their efforts to do so. The political representatives eligible to participate in the Multi-party negotiations can also respond by seeking to overcome their differences and to agree a lasting political settlement which will put a permanent end to violence on this island".Top
