Deputy Reynolds nominated to serve on Asia-Europe Group

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr David Andrews, T.D., has announced the nomination of former Taoiseach, Deputy Albert Reynolds as a member of a high-level group being set up to review relations between Europe and Asia. This group is being asked to recommend practical measures of Asia-Europe cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and other spheres.

Mr Andrews said that he was pleased to be able to nominate Deputy Reynolds who has "the experience and stature to make a valuable contribution to the work of the Asia-Europe Group".

The group will be launched at the second ASEM Summit in London on 2-4 April 1998. The members of the group, who will participate in their individual capacity, are expected to be people of high calibre and international repute. They are meant to complete their work by the end of 1998.

ASEM was established at an Asia-Europe Summit meeting in Bangkok in March 1996 with the aim of developing a comprehensive partnership between Europe and Asia.
