Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs
welcoming the reclassification of Danny McNamee
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Davis Andrews T.D., has been informed today that Danny McNamee, currently a prisoner in the Maze Prison, has been reclassified from top risk to high risk category. The Minister warmly welcomes this development and said "it means that Mr McNamee will now have enhanced prospects for applying for various forms of compassionate and home leave".
The Minister has taken a close personal interest in Mr. McNamee's case over the years and is particularly aware of the widespread concerns about the safety of the conviction in this case. At a meeting with the Danny McNamee Support Group earlier this week, Minister Andrews assured them that the Irish Embassy in London will be closely monitoring Mr McNamee's forthcoming Court of Appeal hearing. "I will continue to take an active, personal interest in Mr. McNamee's case and his welfare" the Minister said.Top
