demining projects in Cambodia and Chechnya,
and additional aid for Africa and Bosnia
Ms. Liz O'Donnell T.D.,Minister of State for Overseas Development and Human Rights at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ms Liz O'Donnell T.D., today announced that she had approved a package of emergency and rehabilitation aid totalling £1.9 million. The funding is focused on providing emergency food aid to countries in the West and East Africa,
to support health, sanitation and education programmes in Somalia and Angola and for infra structural reconstruction projects in Bosnia
The Minister said: "Significant support will also be provided for demining projects in Cambodia and Chechnya. I am committed to providing support for demining and rehabilitation projects with mine victims. Ireland, along with almost one hundred other countries around the world, has reached agreement on a global convention banning the production, stockpiling use and transfer of anti-personnel landmines for all time. These grants underline our ongoing commitment to demining and mine victim rehabilitation projects in Angola, Mozambique and Somalia. This brings our total contribution in this area to just over £3 million".
