Tánaiste comments on the death of former Israeli President Mr Chaim Herzog
In a letter of condolence sent to Israel's Foreign Minister, Mr David Levy, the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dick Spring, T.D., paid tribute to the former President of Israel, Mr Chaim Herzog who died today.
The Tánaiste, who knew President Herzog personally and had the pleasure of welcoming him when he visited Ireland, recalled that he had close family ties with Ireland and said that these were a source of pride for many Irish people, and in particular for the Jewish community in Ireland.
Mr Spring said that "Chaim Herzog served his country with distinction in a number of roles - as a soldier, broadcaster, diplomat and politician, and later as President of Israel. His experience and wisdom will without doubt be missed by the people of Israel".
