Minister Conor Lenihan welcomes Ballymun as Dublin’s first Fairtrade town
Conor Lenihan TD, Minister of State for Irish Aid, today congratulated the people of Ballymun on receiving the 'Fairtrade Town' status from Fairtrade Mark Ireland. Ballymun is the first area of Dublin to receive this status.
“The people of Ballymun have worked very hard to achieve the status of Fairtrade town. I congratulate them and welcome this achievement.
Support for Fairtrade assures small farmers in poor countries of a stable income and allows them to provide for the welfare of their families. The people of Ballymun are playing their part in supporting rural communities in developing countries” said Minister Lenihan.
Irish Aid is the largest international donor to Fairtrade and will provide €7.5 million to the organisation between now and 2010. This support enables poor farmers and small producers in Central America to access Fairtrade markets.
