North/South Bodies – Extension of the Terms of Appointment of Board Members
Extensions to the terms of appointments to the Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission, the North/South Language Body, InterTradeIreland, the Food Safety Promotion Board and Tourism Ireland have been announced.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mr. Peter Hain MP today announced that the terms of office for the Chairs, Vice Chairs and members of the Boards of the North South Implementation Bodies established under the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement - Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission, the North/South Language Body, InterTradeIreland and the Food Safety Promotion Board - will be extended for up to a further year to 12 December 2007.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of State indicated that the extension of the terms of office of the Board members, where appropriate, may be subject to review as the political process develops. In this context, they reiterated their strong commitment to the restoration of the institutions of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, including the North South Ministerial Council, by 26 March 2007.
They also announced that the terms of office for the members of the Board of Tourism Ireland will be extended to 18 December 2007.
The Secretary of State and the Minister for Foreign Affairs praised the work of the Chairs, Vice-Chairs and members of the North/South Bodies and thanked them for their commitment and dedication.
They reiterated their continuing support for the work of all the North South Bodies which were delivering strong all island results in areas such as the promotion of cross-border trade, tourism, food safety promotion and the promotion and development of the Irish language and Ulster Scots.
