Further grants to Irish community organisations in Britain

Further grants to Irish community organisations in Britain

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dermot Ahern T.D., today announced €2 million in additional grants for Irish community organisations in Britain.  In doing so, he emphasised the particular priority which he attaches to supporting projects that benefit older Irish people.

 The Minister said:

“At this Christmas season, I am delighted to make a further €2 million available to Irish organisations in Britain working with our most vulnerable citizens. This means that funding to Irish community organisations in Britain for 2006 will, for the first time ever, exceed €10 million, a significant milestone in the Government’s support for our citizens in Britain.  It represents an increase of 45% on last year and is twelve times the amount that was available when the Government came to office.

My particular priority has been to ensure that this additional support is targeted to services for our older and most vulnerable community in Britain.  We have a clear responsibility to this section of our community at all times but especially so at this Christmas season. In pursuit of this, today’s package of grants will provide substantial additional funding to Irish clubs and centres across Britain specifically for this purpose.

Today's announcement also includes financial support of €1.6 million towards capital projects being undertaken by nine Irish community organisations in Britain. This support will help ensure that a network of top class facilities will be at the disposal of our community in the coming years.

This year’s unprecedented level of funding for organisations assisting vulnerable members of our community in Britain, particularly the older members, is a clear reflection of the Government's strong commitment to the welfare and enhancement of our people abroad.  We are determined to maintain and develop this unprecedented level of support in future years.”

 Note for Editors:

Government funding for emigrant services continues to rise significantly.  In 2006, Department of Foreign Affairs allocation for this area reached €12 million, representing an increase of 45% on 2005. Most of this allocation has been distributed in grants to groups in Britain, with the rest being directed to groups in the USA, Australia and elsewhere.

In 2007 the funding for emigrant services will reach €15.2 million, representing an increase of 27% on 2006 and a fifteen-fold increase since 1997.
