Minister Dermot Ahern welcomes the ending of British Army troop deployment in Crossmaglen

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dermot Ahern T.D., welcomed the final step in bringing fully normalised policing to South Armagh, with the ending today of British Army troop deployment in the PSNI station in Crossmaglen.

“We saw a hugely important breakthrough in normalising politics in Northern Ireland on 26 March and today we are seeing another landmark moment in the normalisation of the security situation.

“The ending of military deployment in Crossmaglen means that there are no longer any joint PSNI / Military bases in Northern Ireland

It is a tribute to how far we have come in building a safer environment for the people of Northern Ireland and it is a further sign that we have definitively entered a new era of relations between the police and the whole community.”
