Minister Ahern's statement on fighting in Lebanon
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern, today issued the following statement on the fighting in Lebanon:
“I am deeply concerned by the escalating violence and the serious loss of life in northern Lebanon. Clashes between Lebanese soldiers and a militant factional group have led to over 50 deaths, including those of at least 8 civilians.
“During my visit to Lebanon earlier this year, it was clear to me that deep divisions and tensions still underlie Lebanese politics and society. But I also heard the overwhelming wish of the Lebanese people not to allow their country to slip back into the long era of violence from which it has emerged.
“It is essential that all groups in Lebanon accept and support the authority of the Government of Prime Minister Siniora and the Lebanese security forces, and that outside parties and armed factions from elsewhere in the region allow Lebanon to move forward in peace.
End.
