Minister Ahern expresses shock at assassination attempt on President Ramos Horta of Timor-Leste
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dermot Ahern T.D., has expressed his shock at the news of the shooting early this morning of the President of Timor-Leste, Mr Jose Ramos Horta, and the separate attack on Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
“I am deeply shocked by news of the shooting and wounding of President Jose Ramos-Horta during an attack on his residence this morning. The information that I have is that the President’s injuries are indeed serious but it is my hope that he will be restored to full health. This incident, coupled with the subsequent attack on Prime Minister Gusmao represents a serious and deeply disturbing assault on the rule of law and democratic institutions in Timor-Leste.
It is my sincere hope that calm and order can be maintained at this very difficult time for the Government and people of Timor-Leste. It is vital that all parties set aside their differences and work together to address the considerable challenges the country faces, and to create a stable and prosperous future for all the people of Timor-Leste.
Timor-Leste is an Irish Aid programme country and Ireland will continue to support it in the promotion of post-conflict reconstruction and development.”
The Embassy in Singapore, which is accredited to Timor-Leste, and the Irish Aid Representative Office in Dili remain in close contact regarding the situation in Timor-Leste. Contact has been made with all Irish citizens, who are safe and well.
A visit by the Minister to Timor-Leste from 20-22 February has been actively in preparation. Plans will be kept closely under review in the light of the situation as it develops.
