Minister Peter Power launches book for children: One World, Our World

Book highlights children’s lives in developing countries receiving aid from Ireland

This afternoon, the Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power TD, launched a new book for children, One World, Our World, at the Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre in Dublin. Minister Power was joined at the event by the book’s author, Grace Wells, and by pupils from North Bay Educate Together Primary School, Kilbarrack.

One World Our World is published by Irish Aid. It uses stories and illustrations to introduce Irish children to five of Ireland’s priority partner countries in Africa and Asia. Speaking at the launch Minister Power said:

"I am delighted to launch this beautiful book ahead of World Book Day tomorrow. Our aim is to introduce Irish children to Ireland’s partner countries in the developing world. The stories in the book capture the beauty and diversity of these countries in Africa and in Asia. They also introduce young Irish people to the development challenges facing the youth of the developing world, and their families. It is important that we understand the scale of these challenges, and that Irish children can learn how Ireland is responding, through Irish Aid, on behalf of the Irish people."

Irish Aid is the Government’s programme of assistance to developing countries. One World, Our World focuses on five of Irish Aid’s priority countries in Africa and Asia: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania and Vietnam. The book is intended primarily for 10-12 year olds or 5th and 6th classes. Copies are available free of charge. Multiple copies are available to schools, libraries, education centres and colleges of education from Irish Aid, Department of Foreign Affairs.
