Minister Martin to visit Bulgaria and Romania

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin T.D. will today (Oct 7th) begin a two day visit to Bulgaria and Romania to promote business and trade links.

The Minister will meet with his counterpart, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Mr. Nikolai Mladenov in Sofia. He will also meet the Minister of Economy, Energy & Tourism, Mr. Traicho Traikov and the Minister for EU Funds Management, Mr. Tomislav Donchev, as part of the programme.

The Minister will then travel to Romania on the evening of 7 October to meet with his Romanian counterpart, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Teodor Baconschi, on 8 October in Bucharest.

The visits will provide an opportunity to reaffirm the close ties that Ireland shares with both Bulgaria and Romania and to mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and both countries. The programme will include meetings with Irish business leaders working in both Sofia and Bucharest, with the aim of promoting Irish trade links with Bulgaria and Romania. The Minister will also meet with Irish aid workers and charities that have been active in the region.

The Minister said:

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to help enhance the significant bilateral relationships between Ireland and Bulgaria and between Ireland and Romania. I look forward to discussing areas of mutual co-operation with Foreign Minister Mladenov in Sofia and Foreign Minister Baconschi in Bucharest and to promoting Irish business interests and expertise, as well as acknowledging Irish charitable work, in both countries”.
