Minister for Foreign Affairs announces funding under Reconciliation and Anti Sectarianism Funds
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Micheál Martin T.D., today announced funding of €917,100 for 59 groups from across Ireland to underpin reconciliation initiatives under the Department of Foreign Affairs' Reconciliation and Anti-Sectarianism Funds. A total of €651,600 has been allocated under the Reconciliation Fund and some €265,500 under the Anti Sectarianism Fund.
Announcing the latest round of funding, Minister Martin said:
“The peace process has brought enormous and tangible benefits to people on both parts of our island but there is no room for complacency. Over the course of this year I have visited North and West Belfast and Lurgan in Co. Armagh and have seen firsthand how communities are working together to build a peaceful and shared future. This is no easy task and they face significant challenges. Now more than ever, fostering lasting reconciliation and combating the sources and effects of sectarianism must remain a priority.
The funding announced today will support the important work of organisations with proven records of building improved community relations and helping people overcome divisions. They are making an impressive contribution to the creation of a shared and peaceful society”.
The Minister commended all the groups receiving funding for their contribution to the process of peace and reconciliation, and the promotion of improved relations on the island of Ireland.
Note for Editors:
As part of the Good Friday Agreement, participants undertook to “positively examine the case for enhanced financial assistance for the work of reconciliation.” The combined 2010 budget for the Reconciliation Fund and the Anti-Sectarianism Fund for this year is €3 million. Since 1999, the two Funds have between them disbursed over €24 million to over 900 projects
